The Joy of Dirt Cake

Ahhh, Dirt Cake.  It’s a great thing to make for parties because it’s relatively easy to put together and doesn’t require any baking.  People usually want to eat it, and it’s also pretty uncomplicated to decorate.

For my housewarming party this past summer, I served up this dirt cake, which was decorated to look like a little garden, complete with rows of candy vegetables and gummy worms beneath the “dirt”.  (In case you’re wondering, I got the marzipan on Etsy, here.)

Of course, you’re not limited to just mini gardens.

You can also:

  • Assemble your dirt cake inside mini flower pots, then decorate with fake flowers and gummy worms…which I’m pretty sure is what everyone did in the early 90s.
  • Make a pretty dirt cake using candied or marzipan flowers (worms optional).
  • Make a Halloween or horror movie inspired dirt cake!  Just decorate it with your favorite macabre-looking treats.  You can buy candy skulls or sweet tart skeletons, check out Etsy for unique handmade candy creations, or even tap into your creative side by decorating your cake with one of the fancy Halloween-inspired treats that are on Pinterest.
